What You Need to Get a Small Business Loan
Getting a business loan is an involved process. It requires more documentation than applying for consumer credit. So don't be dismayed by the amount of paperwork needed. Instead, be ready.

The most effective thing you can bring to the lender is a skillfully put-together and well-documented business plan. State the purpose of the loan (will the money be used for temporary working capital, acquiring equipment, or expanding facilities?) the funds wanted and for how long, and a repayment schedule. Your business plan must include:

Small Business Lending - What the Bankers Want You to Know
Recently I sat down with two bankers from Chevy Chase bank, the Washington DC metro region's largest locally owned bank, now a division of Capital One, N.A.

As a company that has always prided itself as a local bank, but backed by the securities of a U.S. based bank with the 8th largest deposit portfolio in the United States, they assured me they are lending - but to whom?

What types of small businesses are best positioned to get loans today?

Overlooked Advantages of an S Corporation
The big S corporation advantage is payroll tax savings. But let me explain...Partnerships and sole proprietors pay employment taxes on all of their business's profit. In comparison, S corporation shareholders don't. S corp shareholder-employees pay employment taxes only on the business profit paid out as wages.

Structuring My Business To Save Tax
Whether you are a new business or have been trading for some time, you will at some point wonder whether you should you think of incorporating your business. Is it best to trade through your own limited company rather than as a sole trader or partnership? It's a good question to ask for both business reasons and potential tax savings. In general though, it makes more sense to incorporate for business reasons rather than just to save tax, as the tax regime changes over time and any planned savings may no longer be available.

How to Market Your Business In an Economic Recession
Just because we are in the midst of a recession doesn't mean that you have to cut back on your marketing. You can't afford to do that. As a matter of fact, in the midst of a recession is the time that marketing efforts must be increased, not cut back.

Yet traditionally, the problem is that a recession or economic downturn means you have less business, less revenues, and the very first thing that business owners usually cut when revenues fall is the marketing and advertising budget. Nowadays, however, you can get a tremendous advantage over your traditionally-minded competitors by increasing your recession-time advertising and marketing without breaking the financial back of your business.

Small Business Owners: 10 Ways to Stabilize Your Business During a Recession
Yesterday, my friend Terry called me to ask my advice about what her accountant had just said to her. Terry had been told to put into place a "survival plan" for her business. She was reluctant to do so and wanted my counsel and advice.

Terry was upset. Besides cutting expenses, her accountant asked her to consider laying off one or two of the people who work for her, eliminating her employees' sick and personal days, and a salary cut for everyone.

She knows that this is the advice many small business owners are getting right now. But, she was curious to know, is it the right advice? Is there better advice to consider?

Factoring Accounts Receivables in 2010 for ROI
A number of businesses have stayed in business today thanks to working capital garnered from invoice factoring for small business. Tight credit at mainstream banks has made it challenging.

First documented in the American colonies before the revolution, factoring started at a time when materials and/or goods were shipped from the colonies to the Americas. Invoice factoring is not a loan but it's the purchase of financial assets, also known as receivables. It differs from traditional bank loans as follows. Bank loans involve two parties, and factoring involves three parties

10 Ways to Get Banned by the Search Engines
When you build your website, you, of course, want to get high rankings in the search engines. There are lots of ways to do this and lots of ways to NOT do this. Below are 10 things to avoid if you want to be in good standing with the search engines.

1. Duplicate Content/Sites Do not set up multiple sites or site pages using basically the same content with a few different keywords spread around. This does not fool the search engines.

2. Cloaking Cloaking is when a website or webpage is set up to show different content for a search engine spider than the human visitors. The cloaked page (for the spiders) is stuffed with keywords in an attempt to get higher rankings. What it can get you is banned!

Management As A System
What is a system?

A system is comprised of processes, some important, some not so important. A process has a start and a stop, an in and an out. You know you have a process when you can flow chart it on a piece of paper. A process has a certain state. It is mature and working well or could be embryonic and very immature. A process can be broken if some pieces are not working well together. The system then represents the state of all of its processes. The idea of a system is to focus on long term stability. Understanding the system helps not to make short term decisions which may temporarily fix the immediate need but damage the system in the long term. It is easy when trying to resolve problems to focus on cause and effect.

Can I Sell My Financially Challenged Business?
The answer to our question is of course, yes, but not for the profit you once imagined. Business owners and financial managers have to realize that when they make a decision to sell a business that is challenged that they have to totally un-focus on what the business was worth in the past, and what might be worth in the future. The reality is of course the here and now!

Naturally the danger is that a business founder/owner is improperly focused on a very inaccurate opinion of what the business currently might be worth...

Fortunately, mortgage lenders are in an ideal position to help potential borrowers negotiate the maze of terms and jargon that comprise the average mortgage document.

Small Business Advice: Are You Image-Marketing?
If you're a bootstrapping solo entrepreneur, image-marketing should probably be pretty darned low on your list of priorities.

But before I offend too many people, let me say if your competition tends to be heavy corporate types or mega-company types, then you are probably competing with mega "image-marketing" as well and may need to do some level of that.

That said, here's why I'd ditch image-marketing any day in favor of these 3 types of marketing that are far more effective ...

A logo does not a dollar make

I recently spent two full days with a Private Platinum Intensive client and discovered something that astonished me. After carefully considering everything she had created or delivered in the past few years it became crystal clear she was sitting on a goldmine she didn't even know she had.
Not surprising since she, like many of the women entrepreneurs I mentor, have trouble appreciating the value in what they've already done. Instead, they think they have to start over, reinventing everything in order to create the income they desire.
If this sounds like you, then let me reassure you: with a few simple tweaks you'll likely have a fresh, new way of offering your products or services. Trust me, revamping what you have will save you a ton of time, energy and money compared to creating everything from scratch!

Make A Difference And Watch Your Sales Grow
During the past two decades, many of the major insurance companies have been moving to and focusing on the more affluent markets. They want to believe they can make more and larger sales in those markets. Thus, they'll need less agents, which means they'll spend much less money on recruiting and training and they'll make huge profits. They appear to have forgotten whom they served for the past 100 plus years, and what made them the mega companies they are today. According to LIMRA (Life Insurance Marketing and Research Association) the Middle Income marketplace is wide open. And, in our opinion this provides an exceptional opportunity for those few insurance agents, financial advisors and financial planners who will make the effort to learn how to truly help Middle Income Families to solve their financial problems.

Ezine Marketing: How to Triple Your Ezine Opt-ins With a Squeeze Page
For years I've resisted the urge to create a squeeze page for my email newsletter. A squeeze page is a one-page site, or a landing page on a site, that has one call to action: convince the visitor to enter her name and email address to join your list and/or receive your giveaway. On a traditional squeeze page, the visitor has only one option -- to part with her name and email address to opt into your list. This is how the squeeze page term was coined, as the visitor is "squeezed" for her contact information to permit her to continue into the site.

Using the Internet to Build a Network Marketing Downline by Attracting People to You
Using the internet to attract people and build a downline reminds me of when I was first starting my Network Marketing business.

I decided creating an online presence was the way to go so I started a website. I didn't have much help but this seemed like the way to go. It had been a couple of months and my website was getting very little traffic - maybe 10 or 15 people a day visiting, but no contacts were made.

One evening I decided to check my website stats. When I logged in, there had been over 300 contacts made. I KNEW it had to be an error. No way I had that many. I had been getting pretty discouraged at this point and even 3 contacts would have seemed like a miracle. I restarted my computer to clear the 'bug' and get the real stats. But when I logged back in there were over 400 contacts and growing. Long story short, I got over 5000 contacts that week.

Writing and Publishing a Successful Newsletter to Promote your Business
Writing and publishing a successful newsletter is perhaps the most competitive of all the different areas of mail order and direct marketing.

Five years ago, there were 1500 different newsletters in this country. Today there are well over 10,000, with new ones being started every day. It's also interesting to note that for every new one that's started, some disappear just as quickly as they are started - lack of operating capital and marketing know-how being the principal causes of failure.

Strategies for Competitive Advantage in Small Business
Before competitive advantage strategies can be launched, you must consider the needs of your "buying customers" (i.e. Those who pay for your products and services) and your "supplying customers" (i.e. your employees). If you work to keep both of these groups happy (and do not sacrifice one over the other), you will set the stage for weathering the economic storm and outpace the competition. The reason is simple. When you treat your employees as though they were gold, you will ease the stress and worry that they feel during these economic times and they will perform better. They will be better able (and more willing) to implement "above and beyond" strategies for retaining your buying customers.
