Successfully Obtaining Small Business Loans for Women

Loan Application to Approval

Small business loans for women are becoming increasingly important, with a greater than ever number of women deciding to pursue their own business ideas, moving out of the hectic hustle bustle and bureaucracy of office life, and focusing on their own business dreams and interests.  Although women still represent the minority when it comes to entrepreneurs and business owners, there is very significant growth in this area and more importantly, a growing amount of support.  Much of the support is financial, and almost any one, male or female, who is starting out on their road with a new business venture, will almost certainly need capital to help get them started.

Venture capital can be sourced from a number of different places, and it may be that you have already approached your bank for a loan. Unfortunately, women often find that they are turned down for a business loan from the bank, and this is for a number of reasons.  Despite the fact that women are statistically more reliable at paying back a loan or credit which they obtain, the financial market tends to be very hesitant when lending venture capital to women, perhaps due in part to the fact that many women do take significant breaks from work for maternity leave.  However, this should not affect the vast number of women who are embarking on their own business schemes and who represent a reliable financial investment.

In the US 38% of businesses are owned by women, and in the UK women own 30% of the small businesses. These are encouraging figures, but they clearly indicate that women are still in a minority, and part of the problem can be the difficulty women find in obtaining small business loans in order to help get the business venture under way.  There is growing support from the government in the form of grants, many of which are available to those women looking to start up their own business.  A significant amount of very important information can also be found by looking through the information provided by the Small Business Association, (SBA).  Currently the SBA is actively trying to encourage more women to start up their own small business ventures, although it will be important to make sure that you are well prepared when it comes to making an application.

There are many small business loans for women available, and the SBA may well be able to help steer you in the right direction.  They may also be able to identify other possible sources of income, including tax breaks and any initial business training which might prove to be beneficial in starting out on your own. Typical small business loans available to women may well be in the region of $150,000, although significant variations will almost certainly apply depending upon the individual circumstances relating to your business venture.

Depending upon where you live you may well find that your own city or state has a scheme to provide financial support to encourage more women to develop their own business ideas, and your local Small Business Development Center may well be able to help point you in the right direction as far as that is concerned.  It is possible that traditional high-street banking organisations may be able to help, although in almost all situations, you will need an entirely clean credit record, and you may not be able to qualify for financial support from your bank unless you are personally able to afford to guarantee the loan.  Although advertised as business loans for women, many of these are merely personal loans for women who happen to be using the capital to fund their business opportunity.

In the current financial market, small business loans for women are subject to as much scrutiny as any other financial commitment, and in order to help give you the best possible chance of success, it is important to have a full and thorough business plan put together before you begin to make your application.  Being able to provide a comprehensive business plan, including all costs needed, means of financing, predicted cash flow and profitability, and all expenses and anticipated incomes, including any information gleaned from market research, will all help to strengthen your case and help you to become a one of the growing number of women who own their own successful business enterprise.
