Minority Grants and Women Grants: Where to Find ThemThere are different types of grants that are available specifically for minorities and womenThere are different types of grants that are available specifically for minorities and women. These include grants for college, with some grants being focused towards certain areas of study. Grants are preferred over loans, since a grant doesn't have to be repaid like a loan does. However, it can take a bit of time and effort to locate, apply for, and receive minority grants. Here is a list of grants which are available for members of minority groups and women:Pell Grant Although not specifically limited to minorities, this popular grant is utilized time and time again by minority students. The Pell Grant is awarded to students who are able to demonstrate their financial need. Many recipients of this grant come from families with an annual household income of less than $20,000. Providing need-based grants to lower-incme undergraduates that help promote the access to postsecondary education is the basis for the Federal Pell Grant. Students have access to over 5,400 postsecondary institutions that participate in this program. http://www2.ed.gov/programs/fpg/index.html United Negro College Fund This organization devotes itself to the education of African Americans. It is the oldest organization of its kind, and is funded through the support of donors. They administer over 400 scholarship and internship programs so that students from low-income and moderate-income families can afford college tuition, room and board, and also books. It provides a range of minority grants, fellowships and scholarships to African American students for all levels of college education. http://www.uncf.org/ Digital Women Cash Business Grant This grant has been designed to specifically help women start a small business of their own. There is no application fee to apply and they allow you to use the money any way you please including catching up your bills. They understand that with the economy as it stands, more and more women are struggling to make ends meet. Application is simple and must be submitted no later than October 31 of the current year. The current award for 2010 is 750.00 cash. http://www.digital-women.com/2010-business-grant-application.html Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this fund strives to promote academic excellence among African American, Hispanic American, American Indian/Alaskan Native, and Asian Pacific Islander Americans. Eligibility included for the GMS scholarship, contains 3 forms submitted by the deadline. 1. Nominee Form which is the student form 2. Nominator Form 3. Recommender Form There are scholarships available for graduating seniors who maintain at least a 3.3 grade point average who can demonstrate financial need and leadership skills. http://www.gmsp.org/ The Hispanic Scholarship Fund Focused on helping Hispanic and Latino students, the Hispanic College Fund offers assistance and funding. In 2009 they distributed in excess of $28 million to over 4,600 applicants. The First in My Family scholarship grant program is designed to help a Hispanic student who might be the first one ever in his or her family to pursue a college education. http://www.hsf.net/ Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology This fund is designed to provide scholarships and minority grants to African American students who choose to enroll in Historically Black Colleges and Universities for the purpose of studying technical or scientific fields of study. It is focused towards undergraduate students. These scholarships amount to up to $2,000 per year, and are available for up to four years of study. http://dfbsst.dlhjr.com/ American Institute of Certified Public Accountants - Minority Accounting Students Scholarship Designed to provide awards for minority students who choose accounting as their course of study, this scholarship grant is funded by the AICPA foundation. Students need to demonstrate leadership and commitment to becoming a CPA, and must have exceptional academic achievement. http://www.aicpa.org/members/div/career/mini/smas.htm American Dream Scholarship Program For students that meet the requirements for the Pell Grant, the American Dream Scholarship Program is offered in conjunction with the United Negro College Fund.
