I get so tired of the whining and excuses
that people have for not starting their OWN small business. Why do people
hesitate to create a life they love and instead choose to drive everyday
to a job they hate?. Are they afraid to take the plunge because they don't
want to fail?
Below I have included several excuses and
a solution for each one. As you read the excuses see if you have been using
them to keep yourself from achieving a dream of having your own small business
to run and profit from. Believe me, counting your own profits is much more
rewarding than cashing a limited paycheck.
Excuse #1- "I can't live without
the benefits my job provides. The health insurance, etc is important
to my emotional security."
Solution- You can purchase your
own insurance. How often do you go to the doctor every year? How many actual
hospital stays have you had in the last 5 years? How many times in the
last 3 years have you had to visit the emergency room? There are several
health insurance programs that you can subscribe to. If you can't afford
insurance, I guarantee you that your county probably has a county hospital
that takes you whether you have insurance or not. Better yet, take the
appx $600.00 a month allotted for insurance payments and put it in a money
market fund or a CD. The interest will grow and you will ONLY have to use
it in case of health related emergencies. Did you know that 600.00 a month
compounded at a mere 8% for just 10 years will become $112,647.51.
Did you know that just putting aside 200.00 a month at the same interest
rate for 10 years quickly becomes almost $38,000.00. A mere 300.00
a month at the same rate becomes almost $57,000.00. HOW many times in the
last 10 years have you had an actual hospital stay? So the insurance excuse
is a poor one and one you should eliminate from the things that keep you
from starting your own home business or small business.
Excuse #2 - "I need the guaranteed income"
Solution- OH! Your job is guaranteed??
You are SURE that the company you work for won't go under or worse be a
victim to a hurricane like we have seen in the last couple of years? The
company is guaranteed to provide you with a job forever? Get real! HOW
many people have lost their jobs in the last 5 or so years? They also THOUGHT
they had guaranteed income. The debt that people owe and can't pay has
soared because of the loss of guaranteed income. What if you got laid off
tomorrow or worse, fired? What is your backup? There is NO such thing as
guaranteed income, so remove that thought from keeping you from owning
your own small business. The only guarantee you have in life is that YOU
will work harder for YOU. THAT probably IS guaranteed. When you have your
own business, you care more and work harder and the profit is not "limited".
You can make much more than you do now and you can save more.
Excuse #3 - " I don't have enough money
to start my own business"
Solution- This is pure BUNK! It
does NOT take a lot of money to start your own business. I started Digital
Women with only 59.00. "Kinkos" started in a garage with one printer. "Two
Men and a Truck" started with two young men and ONE truck. With the Internet,
starting a business can cost less than 100.00. Are you telling me you don't
have 100.00 to start a life of freedom and profit. You don't have 100.00
to be your own boss, make your own schedule, sell whatever you want to
sell? This is the worst excuse and needs to be dropped from your list of
obstacles holding you back from starting your own home business or small
business.
Excuse #4 - " I don't know what kind
of business to start"
Solution- This one always makes
me laugh. You don't know what kind of business to start. Well start with
something you love to do and then making a business of it will become a
reality. WHAT do you love to do? WHAT do you want to spend your time doing?
I don't care what it is that you love to do, there IS a way to make money
at it. Let's say you love to piddle in the garden. Here are a few ways
to make money at that:
1. Horticulture books
2. Herbs for wholesale or retail
3. Vegetables for wholesale or retail
4. Landscaping
5. Flower growing and arranging
6. Greenhouse designer
7. I could go on with a least 30 more
ways to make money in some kind of gardening related field.
SO, remove the obstacle of not knowing what
kind of business to start from your list. Decide what you want to do that
is FUN for you and then find creative ways to make money at it.
Excuse #5 "What if my business fails?"
Solution- Yeah? So?
I'm curious.... the first time you fell
off your bike did you never get back on? The first time you burnt dinner,
did you quit cooking? The first time you lost a boyfriend did you quit
dating? Do you get the point? A failure doesn't mean quitting. It means
reorganizing, remanaging, restructuring, and trying again. I would be embarrassed
to show you the "first" web site that was Digital Women. As it grew, I
grew. I came across a lot of things that were failrures. I restructured,
tried something different until I found what worked. I made a LOT of mistakes
and so will you unless you are a seasoned entrepreneur in which case you
don't need any advice. So, remove this excuse from your list of reasons
why you haven't started your own home business or small business. Yes,
your business might fail at first. Find a mentor. Find a successful business
"like" the one you want to have and do what they did, but in your own way
with your own ideas.
Excuse #6 "My family won't support me
in my dream"
Solution- This one is a little bit
harder to overcome BUT it is worth it. You have to realize that you cannot
live out "their" fears. If they have objections it is because of one reason.
Fear. They either have a financial fear, or they have a fear of "change".
People don't like change. They like things to stay where they are when
they are comfortable. If you change, then they see that they might have
to change and that scares them. You will need to alleviate their fears
with wise words and in the meantime you need to keep reassuring "yourself"
that you are doing what is best for YOU. If you are unhappy working for
someone else, or you are unhappy with other people telling you what to
do, when to do it and how to do it, then you don't have to do that anymore.
You CAN be your own boss. I have been my own boss for almost 30 years now.
They is NO way that I could go back to having someone ELSE tell me when,
where, or how. I could not go back to someone telling me how much money
I'm allowed to bring home. I don't WANT a limit on my income. I don't want
a limit on my freedom, and I sure don't want a limit on my ability to live
a life that I love.
Well, I have covered the most important
excuses anyone can have when they try to come up with reasons for not having
their own business. If there are any more, I guarantee you they are minor
and easily overcome. If you need a list of small business or home business
