1. Two thirds of
people living below the poverty line in the US are women with dependent
children who get the lowest pay when they work outside the home.
2. Lack of pay equity, which
begins with girls, drags women's income down even after retirement: women
in the US with pensions receive half the amount that men receive: $4200
annually compared to $7800 for men – a retirement wage gap where women
receive 53 cents for every dollar a man receives.
3. Between 1997 and 2004,
the number of Hispanic women-owned firms increased by 64%, generating
nearly $44.4 billion in 2004 sales nationwide — an increase of 62%
in sales since 1997.
4. Even though the Equal
Pay Act went into effect in 1963 where women were making 59% of what men
make, women still only make 73% of what their male counterparts make, according
to the National Organization for Women. WOW! 14% more since 1963. (Another
reason I have a business of my own!)
5. Quote From the Daily
Nebraskan: "Who benefits from this inequity? NOW’s website
also explains that if women made the same amount of money as men, the average
family income would rise by $4,000 and poverty rates would drop by half.
It would also raise family incomes by $200 billion. It seems as though
many people would benefit from pay equality for women. The $200 billion
would have to come from somewhere, and that place is the already-bloated
wallet of corporate America."
